Congressman Tim Ryan and Senators Brown & Portman Applaud Passage of Ryan’s Legislation to Name Youngstown Veterans Affairs Clinic After Local Army Hero Carl Nunziato
Washington, DC – Congressman Tim Ryan (OH-13) along with Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Rob Portman (R-OH) today applauded the final Senate passage of bipartisan and bicameral legislation authored by Ryan to name a Department of Veterans Affairs community-based outpatient clinic in Youngstown, Ohio after Major Carl Nunziato, a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Major Nunziato served two voluntary tours of combat duty in Vietnam, where he was severely injured by a mortar shell while protecting the village of Soui Da, causing him to lose his legs. For his bravery, he received the Bronze Star, the Army Air Medal, a Purple Heart, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. Throughout his admirable life, Carl Nunziato has served Youngstown and the United States, both at home and abroad with bravery and honor. He has worked valiantly to improve accessibility, right, and quality of life for veterans and people with disabilities, and the naming of the Youngstown Veterans Affairs Clinic after Mr. Nunziato is a fitting tribute to his outstanding work and service.
“Major Carl Nunziato is a true American hero and represents the very best of Ohio. From serving two tours in Vietnam to fighting for veterans and disabled rights, Carl has dedicated his life to serving our country. He was instrumental to bringing the VA outpatient clinic to Youngstown, and his tireless work in our community and with Youngstown State has helped countless students and veterans. I couldn’t be prouder that we are naming the new Youngstown VA facility in Carl’s honor and recognizing his heroism and sacrifice,” said Congressman Tim Ryan.
“The renaming of the Youngstown VA Clinic in honor of Major Carl Nunziato is the right way to honor a man who did so much to help his fellow veterans. Carl served our nation honorably in Vietnam and then continued that service through his work in the Valley through his advocacy work and philanthropy. I’m glad to join Senator Portman and Representative Ryan in celebrating this well-deserved honor,” said Senator Sherrod Brown.
“Carl Nunziato is a true son of Ohio and an American patriot who deserves this honor,” said Senator Rob Portman. “I’m proud that my Senate colleagues passed this important legislation to name the Veterans Affairs clinic in Youngstown, Ohio after Major Nunziato. He has fought and sacrificed for our nation, for his fellow veterans, and for all disabled Americans and this legislation is a fitting tribute to his valuable achievements. I’m grateful for his service and proud to call him a fellow Ohioan.”
Congressman Ryan introduced this legislation in the House last year, and then pressed US House Leaders to ensure its swift passage earlier this fall. Just over a week later, it passed the House and was sent to the Senate for consideration.
