Congressman Tim Ryan Announces $186,902 to Akron and Garrettsville Fire Departments
Washington, DC – Congressman Tim Ryan (OH-13) today announced $186,902 in federal grant awards to the fire departments of Akron and Garrettsville. The Akron award of $24,228.57 is a Fire Prevention & Safety Grant; the Garrettsville award of $162,674 is an Assistance to Firefighters Operations and Safety Grant. Both programs are administered by the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in cooperation with the US Fire Administration.
“The firefighters of Akron and Garrettsville serve their communities day in and day out and put themselves in harm’s way to protect their communities,” said Congressman Ryan. “I will always work to make sure that our first responders get what they need to do their jobs safely and effectively.”
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant to Garrettsville is part of $315 million being awarded to fire departments, certain EMS organizations, and state fire training academies around the nation to fund professional training, wellness, fitness programs, equipment, personal protective equipment, and supplies that support operations and safety.
The Fire Prevention and Safety Grant (FP&S) Program received by Akron is part of coordinated effort to strengthen the Nation’s overall level of preparedness and ability to respond to fire and related hazards. Since 2001, the AFG program has provided approximately $7 billion in grants to first-responder organizations to obtain much-needed emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, firefighting and emergency vehicles, and training.
