Congressman Tim Ryan Announces $368,466 Family & Community Services Grant to Provide VISTA Services to Northeastern Ohio
Youngstown, Ohio – Congressman Tim Ryan is announcing today a $368,466 grant for Family & Community Services from AmeriCorps, the federal agency for service and volunteering to support a new AmeriCorps VISTA Project. The project will fund 18 full-time positions and provide up to $133,010 in additional funding for education scholarships for the AmeriCorps VISTA members to help pay for college, vocational training, or to assist them in paying back student loans.
“I am happy to support the work of Family and Community Services and the work of VISTA in making our communities healthier, better places to live and work,” said Congressman Ryan. "Family and Community Services has a long history of providing needed services to Northeast Ohio and their VISTA partnership is an important component in addressing many of the problems faced in our community."
“Family & Community Services is grateful to receive another year of funding through AmeriCorps VISTA,” said Mark Frisone, Executive Director of Family & Community Services. “From improving access to healthy foods and healthcare, to mentoring and supporting youth, VISTA members are essential to the work we do in our community.”
This VISTA project will seek to recruit and develop volunteers to mentor children for academic success, to improve access to health care and community resources for youth, low-income individuals as well as seniors. AmeriCorps members will work in programs that can benefit Family & Community Services clients in housing, and aid in the recruitment of volunteers to provide services to promote the health of low-income individuals, including youth and seniors.
This AmeriCorps VISTA award will provide $2,744,430 to the State of Ohio with VISTA members being eligible for $990,693 in additional education scholarships. AmeriCorps VISTA members are provided a living allowance, skill-building, training and support, health and childcare support, an education award or end of service stipend, and the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of Ohio residents.
