Congressman Tim Ryan Announces Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Eligibility for 80 Employees of Akron’s Maxion Wheels Steel Plant

September 17, 2020
Press Release

Washington, DC – Congressman Tim Ryan (OH-13) today announced that 80 employees of Maxion Wheels USA LLC of Akron will receive important job training and placement assistance after the U.S. Department of Labor certified that their jobs were lost after the production of their work was shifted to a foreign country. In August of 2020, Maxion Wheels LLC announced the closure of Seiberling Street plant in Akron, Ohio, which was first opened in 1927 and produced steel wheels for commercial and military vehicles.

“These vital TAA benefits will help ensure that Maxion Wheels workers will get the training and job placement assistance they need to successfully find new work and secure the future for their families,” said Congressman Ryan. “It is my hope that the day will come when these workers can return to Maxion Wheels, but in the meantime they can get the assistance they need to go back to work and make a livable wage.”

The U. S. Department of Labor (DOL) issued a certification of eligibility under the Trade Act of 1974 which said that, “All workers of MAXION WHEELS USA LLC AKRON, OH who became totally or partially separated from employment on or after 08/13/2019 and prior to 09/10/2022, and all workers in the group threatened with total or partial separation from employment on or after 08/13/2019 and prior to 09/10/2022 are eligible to apply for adjustment.”

Trade Adjustment Assistance is a federal program that provides aid to workers who lose their jobs or whose hours of work and wages are reduced as a result of increased imports. The program extends benefits including training for employment in another job or career, income support, job search allowance, and relocation allowances. Covered workers must be enrolled in Trade Adjustment Assistance Reauthorization Act of 2015 (TAARA)-approved training by the last day of the 26th week of the worker's most recent Trade related separation; or the last day of the 26th week after the certification, whichever is later.
