Congressman Tim Ryan Applauds Mahoning Valley Scrappers Continued Affiliation with Major League Baseball

Ryan was a leading advocate for the Scrappers – making calls, sending letters, and cosponsoring legislation

Niles, Ohio – Congressman Tim Ryan (OH-13) applauded today’s announcement of continued affiliation between the Mahoning Valley Scrappers and Major League Baseball (MLB). The Scrappers will join the newly formed MLB Draft League which will begin playing in 2021 and will focus on displaying the talents of top college level players eligible for the MLB draft. This long-term partnership between the Scrappers and MLB will ensure that top talent will continue to play in the Mahoning Valley for years to come. 

Ryan has been a leading advocate to ensure the Scrappers retained their affiliation with MLB. Working closely with the team leadership, Ryan made calls, sent letters, introduced legislation, and had many tough discussions fighting on behalf of the Scrappers.

January 30, 2020 – Ryan requests meeting with MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred to discuss Major League Baseball’s (MLB) plans to cut 42 Minor League (MiLB) teams – including the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. Ryan has previously called on Manfred to reverse the decision. More info here

January 28, 2020 – Ryan introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives to support the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. This bipartisan resolution expressing the sense of Congress that Major League Baseball (MLB) should maintain the current minor league structure rather than proceed with its plan to eliminate 42 minor league clubs. December 20, 2019 – Ryan wrote a letter to Cleveland Indians owner Paul Dolan and Major League Baseball Commissioner Robert Manfred to urge them to abandon MLB’s plan to end its affiliation with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers and 41 other Minor League teams. More info here
