Congressman Tim Ryan Joins House Colleagues in Introducing Legislation to Strengthen and Expand Social Security

Press Release
Social Security 2100 Act: A Sacred Trust will Strengthen Social Security, Increase Benefits, Cut Taxes for Seniors

Washington, DC – Congressman Tim Ryan (OH-13) today joined House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Chairman John B. Larson (CT-01), Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (SC-06), and House Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal (MA-01) to introduce the Social Security 2100 Act: A Sacred Trust, a bill that would increase Social Security’s vital benefits and make the system financially strong for generations to come.

“One in five retirees rely only on Social Security for their income. At a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the vast inequities in our economy and health care system, it’s more vital than ever that we strengthen and expand Social Security for the millions of Americans who rely on it,” said Congressman Ryan.  “By improving the cost-of living adjustment to consider inflation, increasing minimum benefits, and preventing the program from future cuts, this bill will help ensure that every American can age with dignity and respect.”

Among its many provisions, the Social Security 2100 Act: A Sacred Trust:

  • Increases benefits across the board for current and new beneficiaries.
  • Improves cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to consider inflation that impacts seniors.
  • Updates the “special minimum benefit” to ensure no one retires into poverty after a full career of work by improving benefits for long-serving, low-wage workers.
  • Strengthens Social Security Trust Funds.
  • Provides a tax cut for millions of middle-income recipients by eliminating the tax on their benefits.
  • Enhances Social Security Administration’s (SSA) delivery service to the public.

Social Security remains the single most reliable program for middle class Americans. In Ohio alone, there are 2.4 million Social Security recipients who receive $3.3 billion in monthly benefits. With common sense steps like those in the Social Security 2100 Act: A Sacred Trust, Congress can boost this vital program now and ensure Social Security remains strong well into the future.
