Congressman Tim Ryan Statement on Violence at Recent Protests in Portland and Seattle

July 26, 2020
Press Release

Youngstown, Ohio – Congressman Tim Ryan made the following statement in response to recent violence at protests in Portland and Seattle”

“John Lewis famously said, ‘I believe in nonviolence as a way of life, as a way of living.’ I truly believe this will be the only way we can find change. The violent acts we have seen in recent days and weeks in Portland and Seattle do not represent the values of the vast majority of the peaceful protestors in cities across the United States who have joined their voices together to call for police reform and to state clearly that Black Lives Matter. I fully support these peaceful protestors and have been proud to join in the marches here in Ohio. There is no question that we need real change in this country. But those protestors who have chosen violence, throwing bricks and assaulting police officers and deploying fireworks at police stations, are only harming this important mission. I am pleading for an immediate end to this violence and lawlessness.  I am calling on a renewed commitment to the peaceful, civil and nonviolent protests that John Lewis dedicated his life to.”
