Congressman Tim Ryan Thanks National Guard for Facilitating Peaceful Transition of Power

January 20, 2021
Press Release
Ryan: “Transparency From National Guard Helped Comfort Those Unsure About Inauguration Safety”

Washington, DC – Congressman Tim Ryan (OH-13), Co-Chair of the National Guard and Reserve Caucus and Chairman of the House Legislative Branch Appropriations Subcommittee today thanked the National Guard for its crucial role in protecting the Capitol and facilitating a peaceful transition of power on Inauguration Day. In a letter to General Daniel Hokansen, Chief of the U.S. National Guard Bureau, Ryan highlighted transparency and honesty from the Guard, which assisted in comforting the public about the safety of the Inauguration after the violent insurrection on January 6th.

“Although it is impossible that you could personally pass along my thanks to every single member of your force that answered the call today, please know that the efforts of the National Guard will not be forgotten,” wrote Congressman Ryan.

The National Guard deployed 25,000 troops to the nation’s capital for the Inauguration, including nearly 1,000 from the State of Ohio.

After Guardmembers were deployed to the Capitol last week, Ryan fought to supply them with access to showers in the House Office Buildings, hot meals, and cots. Additionally, he helped secure free coffee and donuts in House dining facilities for National Guardmembers as a small token of gratitude for the Guard’s service.

General Hokanson:

As the Co-Chair of the National Guard and Reserve Caucus, please allow me to thank you for facilitating the 59th peaceful transfer of power from one President to another.

You and your staff were beyond transparent. Your honesty assisted me in comforting other Members of Congress that may have been hesitant to be here in the District on one of the most important days in our Nation’s history.

Although it is impossible that you could personally pass along my thanks to every single member of your force that answered the call today, please know that the efforts of the National Guard will not be forgotten.

Always Ready, Always There.

Sincerely,

###
