Congressman Tim Ryan Urges House Leaders to Rename Youngstown VA Clinic After Local Army Hero

September 14, 2020
Press Release

Washington, DC – Congressman Tim Ryan (OH-13) pressed US House Leaders to pass his bill renaming the Youngstown VA clinic after Army veteran Carl Nunziato, a Youngstown native and veterans’ rights advocate. In a letter sent to House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and Congressman Mark Takano (CA-41), Chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, Ryan urged swift passage of his bill, H.R. 5023 – which Ryan introduced in November of 2019 to rename the clinic.

“This bill was recommended to my office and strongly supported by leaders within my congressional district’s Veterans community because they seek to honor one of their own for his exemplary service. Throughout his life, Carl selflessly devoted himself to our country and his fellow veterans. The naming of this clinic is a small measure in comparison to what he has accomplished on behalf of our country's heroes,” wrote Congressman Ryan.

“I ask that the House Democratic Leadership find time in the September floor schedule to pass this bill—which has the unanimous and bipartisan support of the Ohio Congressional Delegation--so it may advance to the Senate and be acted upon before the end of the 116th Congress,” he continued.

Carl graduated from Youngstown State ROTC as the Distinguished Military Graduate in 1961, commissioning into the U.S. Army. He served two voluntary tours of combat duty in Vietnam. On his second tour, Carl was severely injured and lost both legs while protecting a small Vietnamese village in Soui Da. Carl played a critical part in bringing a VA outpatient clinic to Youngstown and helped build the Veterans Resource Center at Youngstown State University, the only standalone building of its kind in Ohio.

Every member of the Ohio US House delegation joined Congressman Ryan as original cosponsors of the legislation.

The Honorable Mark Takano
Chairman, House Veterans Affairs Committee
420 Cannon House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515

Majority Leader Hoyer and Chairman Takano:

I write to urge swift passage of my bill, H.R. 5023, which is under the jurisdiction of the House Veterans Affairs Committee. H.R. 5023 designates the Department of Veterans Affairs community-based outpatient clinic in Youngstown, Ohio, as the "Carl Nunziato VA Clinic".

This bill was recommended to my office and strongly supported by leaders within my congressional district’s Veterans community because they seek to honor one of their own for his exemplary service. Throughout his life, Carl selflessly devoted himself to our country and his fellow veterans. The naming of this clinic is a small measure in comparison to what he has accomplished on behalf of our country's heroes.

I ask that the House Democratic Leadership find time in the September floor schedule to pass this bill—which has the unanimous and bipartisan support of the Ohio Congressional Delegation--so it may advance to the Senate and be acted upon before the end of the 116th Congress.

Thank you for your consideration of this important matter.

Sincerely,
