Congressman Tim Ryan Reacts to WTO Trade Case Against China

Feb 18, 2015 Issues: Helping Working Families

Congressman Tim Ryan made the following statement following the announcement of a broad trade case against China at the World Trade Organization, challenging China’s provision of illegal export subsidies to a broad range of industries:

“I applaud this move to end certain illegal Chinese trade practices that are harming competitiveness and costing jobs in the United States. As Chairman of the Congressional Manufacturing Caucus, I know that American manufacturing thrives when competing on a level playing field  -- and this is the type of strong message our nation must send to China so that we may begin to create a fair and balanced trade system. Further, this challenge protects our businesses and ensures that hardworking Americans will be able to find and keep good paying jobs here at home.

“Moving forward, I call on Congress to act swiftly and pass the bipartisan Currency Reform and Fair Trade Act and I call on President Obama to include strong and enforceable currency obligations in any future trade agreements. Research shows that currency manipulation has cost our nation as many as 5 million jobs in the last decade and it is time that we finally put an end to this attack on American workers.”
